World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Private in the 215th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. During an attack on German positions at Ficheux, France, on June 28, 1916, Private Hutchinson was the leading man entering their trench; he shot two sentries and cleared two of the traverses. Afterwards, when the objective had been gained and the retirement ordered, on his own initiative, he undertook the dangerous task of covering the retirement thus ensuring that the wounded could be removed to safety. For bravery in the face of the enemy, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and awarded the Victoria Cross Medal.
