World War II Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as Lieutenant Colonel Commander, 7th Battalion, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. At West Akarit, Tunisia, April 6, 1943, Lieutenant Colonel Campbell had to break through an enemy minefield and anti-tank ditch in order to form a bridgehead. His battalion formed up in darkness and then attacked at an angle, being successful in capturing at least 600 prisoners. Next day the position was subjected to heavy continuous bombardment and, although he was wounded, he continued to lead on the battlefield. For gallantry in action, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal on June 8, 1943, and later achieved the rank of Brigadier General.
