Thomas George was the son of Thomas and Amelia Handley of 26 Rose Street, Northfleet, and the brother of Robina, Charles, John, Elizabeth, William, Percy, Edith and Alice.
He was born at Northfleet on 26th September 1885 and grew up at 26 Rose Street, Northfleet, and by the age of fifteen was already working as a labourer in the cement industry.
He married Ettie Amelia Butts at St Marks' Church, Rosherville, on 25th February 1912 and had four children, Alice, Thomas (1914), Kath and Jesse (1916). When he enlisted in 1915 they were living at 9 Rose Street, Northfleet and he was working as a paper mill labourer.
During WWI he served as a Rifleman with the 5th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment (a reserve battalion based at Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham and serving on the home front), his service number was 40441. He was passed as fit on enlistment, but his medical records note "mitral stenosis", a narrowing of the mitral valve of the heart. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1st June 1916 but was reverted to Private on 16th December 1917 because of "Inefficiency".
He served on the Western Front and contracted trench foot, for which he was treated at Lewisham Hospital from 2nd May 1917 until 30th July 1918. Between 1st March and 1st July 1918 he was at Shoreham-by-Sea Hospital for the amputation of the second toe of his left foot due to frost-bite.
He was discharged on 25th February 1919 with a payment of £12 for the loss of his toe and recieved the Victory Medal.
He died on 30th July 1948 and was buried in Bridgend Cemetery, grave M 204. At the time of his death he was living at 41 Pendre, Bridgend.
