Jean McCormick was the daughter of Jane "Calamity Jane" Cannary and James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok. Many people knew that Jane had a "crush" on Hickok but few, if any, knew that they were married. This was claimed after he was killed during a poker game on Aug. 2, 1876.

Jane claimed that James Butler Hickok was the father of her child Jean, born on Sept. 25, 1873 while she was working as a scout for the army. The child was put up for adoption by Jim O'Neil and his wife. On Sept. 6, 1941 the U.S. Dept. of Public Welfare did grant old age assistance to a Jean Hickok Burkhardt McCormick after receiving evidence that Calamity Jane and Wild Bill had married at Benson's Landing, Montana Territory, on September 25, 1873. There are no records which prove, or disprove that a child was born to them.

Calamity Jane was buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery (South Dakota), next to Wild Bill Hickok.
