Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. The official citation reads: "Removed severely wounded officers and soldiers from the field while under a heavy fire from the enemy, exposing himself beyond the call of duty, thus furnishing an example of most distinguished gallantry." He was a Newark, New Jersey physician with dgrees from Williams College (1846) and the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1851). During the Civil War, he served first as surgeon of the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiment and of General William French's Brigade. Later, he was designated Surgeon of United States Volunteers by Congress. He served in the battles of Bull Run, Fair oaks, Gaines Mills, Peach Orchard station, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Vicksburg.
