Serbian Monarch. At the first elections held after the promulgation of the 1878 Constitution and abdication of King Milan the Radicals again won a majority.To preclude ex-King's Milan interference in affairs of state, the Radicals paid him a large sum of money in return for which he promised to stay away from Serbia until young King Alexander came of age. When king Alexander declared himself of age, April 1, 1893, overthrew the Regents, fired the Liberal government and brought the Radicals to power.On June 1900, King Alexander publicized his intention to marry Draga Masin, a widow and caused a storm of public protests. A goal that evaded King Milan in 1886 - to reconcile the Radicals and Progressives- was achieved by Alexander. By leaning towards Russia, King Alexander scored some political successes in Old Serbia and Macedonia. However, after a series of scandals in Serbia, it began to distance himself of King Alexander announced visit to Russia was postponed repeatedly. Towards the end of Alexander reign, Serbia found itself in unprecedented international isolation. Popular dissatisfaction mounted in all classes and some spilled over into the army, leading to a coupe the 'etat.
