Once out of the service, he moved to San Antonio, Houston and finally to Twin Falls, Idaho. Family members said Armstrong had a natural talent for art and music; his paintings and sculptures are treasured by his family and friends. His natural musical abilities let him play a variety of musical instruments. The family said that his favorite was playing the tuba in German polka bands. He was an accomplished artisan with a passion for refurbishing antiques, they said. He loved the outdoors, especially the views along the Snake River.
