Marion James was the daughter of a newspaper editor who died when Marion was less than a year old. Marion later went to the University of Wisconsin in Madison and graduated from there. Later on, in 1923, Marion and Wally Byam met and fell in love. Marion James and Wallace Merle "Wally" Byam were married June 21, 1924 in the Church of Angels in Pasadena. According to several accounts, Wally tried to interest her in camping. She obliged but did not like the primitive life associated with camping. Wally then came up with the idea of a tent like structure built over an old Ford chassis to tow around to camping sites. That led to the formation of the Airstream Trailer Co. Sadly, they divorced sometime in May 1951 in Los Angeles, California. He went on to marry Estelle "Stella" North Hall. Later on, Marion became the head of the Los Angeles Red Cross Chapter for eighteen years and served as a consultant to the state.
