Also a noted businessman, Stairs was a prominent member of the Stairs family from Nova Scotia, who made there money in shipping, and later was Director of several companies including the Eastern Trust, Nova Scotia Steel, Halifax Steamboat Company, Trinidad Electric and Royal Securities, and Consumer Cordage. His cousin was the famous Victorian-era explorer and adventurer, William Grant Stairs.
