World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Berkeley, England, he served as a Lieutenant in the King's Royal Rifle Corps Attached Pioneer Company, Gold Coast Regiment. At the Cameroons, West Africa, on November 17, 1914, with a party of thirteen men, Lieutenant Butler attacked the enemy in the strength of about one hundred, defeated them and captured their machine gun, plus many loads of ammunition. On December 27, 1914, when on patrol duty with a few men, he swam the Ekaw River alone, which was held by the enemy and in the face of brisk fire completed his reconnaissance on the further bank and returned in safety. For most conspicuous bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on August 23, 1915. He later achieved the rank of Captain and was killed in action at Motomba, East Africa.
