World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. In the First World War, he served as a Lieutenant in the 50th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. For the attack on Ledeghem Belgium, October 1, 1918, he was in command of a 18-pound canon in support of infantry. Seeing that the infantry was being driven back by intense German machine-gun fire, he brought his gun into action in the most exposed positions. Without hesitation, several times he galloped his gun in front of the leading infantry destroying enemy machine guns resulting in the success of the attack. For most conspicuous bravery, he was awared the Victoria Cross Medal in December 1918.
