U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to North Carolina in 1841, he later attended Emory and Henry College, Virginia, until 1861. During the Civil War, he served as a captain in the Confederate Army. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1869 and proceeded to practice law in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving until 1881. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
