Michigan Governor. While as a school teacher, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and established a legal practice in Georgia, Vermont. Relocating to Michigan, in 1831, he had a successful career as a merchant and was a member of the Michigan State Senate, (1838-38). In 1841, he was elected as a Democrat, the 4th Governor of Michigan, serving until 1846. He was again elected as the 8th Governor of Michigan, serving (1850-52). After retiring from public service, he ran a mercantile business until his death at age 67.
