US Congressman. Born at a plantation called "Cotton Garden", he attended the University of North Carolina for two years and became owner of his own plantation, "Locust Grove." Sherrod was also involved in several other business ventures, including plantations in Alabama and Texas, railroads, mines, and real estate. He served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1859 to 1860 and was a Delegate to the 1860 Democratic national convention. Though he was opposed to secession, at the start of the Civil War he moved his slaves to Texas to prevent them from escaping, joined the Confederate Army as Commissary of Alabama's 5th Cavalry Brigade with the rank of Major, and later attained promotion to Colonel. In 1868 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat and served one term, 1869 to 1871. He did not run for reelection in 1870 and returned to his business interests, also serving as a member of the Alabama Senate in 1875. In 1893 he moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, and was elected Mayor in 1899, but declined to serve on grounds of ill health.
