born Aug 9, 1861 in Alamance County, NC and died Mar 21, 1935 in Greensboro, Guilford County, NC.

Daughter of James Madison and Affia Haseltine (Stone) Sheridan.

Mattie's father, James M. Sheridan was killed at the Battle of Bristoe Station, VA on Oct 14, 1863 during the Civil War. Her mother, Affia Haseltine (Stone) Sheridan died the following year in 1864. Mattie was only 3 years old when her mother died leaving all four children orphaned. After Affia died, her four daughters were split up among relatives and never lived together again.

Mattie went to live with her Aunt Ann Helen Stone (Affia's sister) who was married to Manley Coble. Helen and Manley raised Mattie along with their own children. They lived in Randolph County, NC near Asheboro.

Mattie and her husband William lived at Evergreen Farm on Taylor's Creek in Randolph County NC until their deaths.
