United States Marine Corps General. He served 38 years in the United States Marine Corps, starting with his enlistment in 1936 in the Marine Corps Air reserve. He earned his pilot's wings to become a Naval aviator, and served in the Pacific Theatre in air combat roles during World War II. Eventually rising to Major General, he commanded a fighter squadron during the Korean War, and led the 3rd Marine Air Wing and the 4th Marine Air Wing. During his service he was awarded a total of five Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Legions of Merit, and two Bronze Stars with Combat V.
