Roman Catholic Pope. Born 'Benedict Cajetan' or 'Benedetto Gaetano'. Descendant of a noble family originally Spanish, but long established in Italy. Related to Pope Innocent III, Pope Gregory IX, and Pope Alexander IV. He was regarded as a man of great ability and he meddled incessantly in foreign affairs, and put forward some of the strongest claims to temporal as well as spiritual supremacy of any pope.
