U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma with a journalism degree in 1924, he was a reporter and political writer for the Oklahoma News, (1924-28). He also was a president of the family's retail furniture business in Oklahoma City. Entering politics, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving (1939-51). Not a candidate for reelection, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving (1951-69). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was an aviation consultant and member of several boards of directors, in Washington, D.C. After leaving public offices, he lived in retirement his death. Upon his request, he was cremated with part of the ashes placed in a niche in the Washington Cathedral, Washington, D.C. and the remaining ashes scattered on the grounds of the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
