Politician. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was a member of Wyoming state house of representatives in 1933-34. He was secretary of state of Wyoming in 1935-43. A delegate to Democratic National Convention from Wyoming in 1940, 1944, 1948. He was Governor of Wyoming in 1943-49. A U.S. Senator from Wyoming in 1949-54. Despairing over his poor health and threats to expose his son's arrest for homosexual solicitation, he shot himself in the head with a rifle, and died soon after.
