THOMAS BIRKETT
1844 - 1920

Born in Ottawa, Birkett was a successful businessman who built a large hardware business at the corner of William and Rideau Streets. He served on the Public School Board for many years, and was an Alderman for St. George's Ward and Chief Magistrate of the Dominion Capital. In 1891, he was elected Mayor of Ottawa. From 1900 to 1904 he served as a Member of the House of Commons, representing Ottawa City.

Né à Ottawa, M. Birkett était un homme d'affaires fructueux qui a bâti une importante entreprise de matériaux à l'angle de William et Rideau. Il a servi sur le Conseil Scolaire pendant de nombreuses années. Il a été échevin pour le Quartier St. George et le Premier Magistrat de la Capitale du Dominion. En 1891, il est élu Maire d'Ottawa et de 1900 à 1904, il est Membre de la Chambre des Communes représentant la Ville d'Ottawa.
