He was one of the most celebrated directors and masters of spirituals who created dozens of new original arrangements of classic spirituals, and formed several choirs that performed them with new vitality. He is recognized as a leading force in promoting and preserving the African-American musical experience. Hogan was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 13, 1957. He went on to graduate from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) and Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio. He also studied at New York's Juilliard School of Music and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Since 1980 Hogan began his exploration of the choral music idiom forming a series of vocal group--the New World Ensemble, the Moses Hogan Chorale, and the Moses Hogan Singers, which recorded and performed at such prestigious venues as the Kennedy Center and the Sydney Opera House. Hogan soon became one of the most influential names in modern choral singing by rejuvenating the genre of African-American Spirituals for both choral singers and audiences. He also established his own record label MGH Records, which recorded many of his works. With over 70 published works, Hogan's arrangements have become staples in the repertoires of high school, college, church, community and professional choirs worldwide.
