Mildred E. Brady, 85 of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at the Inn on Westport of Alzheimer's Disease.
Mildred Elizabeth McGovern, daughter of Reverend Joseph C. and Frances (McLean) McGovern, was born on February 7, 1925, in Avon, SD. After living briefly in Canada, she moved with her family to Mitchell, SD, where she graduated from high school in 1943. Mildred then attended the Methodist School of Nursing in Mitchell, SD. Part of her training was in San Francisco, CA, where she worked with the Cadet Corps, caring for wounded solders. She graduated in 1946 and then attended Indiana Wesleyan University.
Mildred was united in marriage with Harold Brady on August 29, 1948, in Mitchell, SD. The family moved from various states along with Harold's profession, until Mildred retired in Florida. In 1991, they moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where they have remained.
Mildred was an active member of First United Methodist Church and was involved with the Methodist Women and many other programs. Mildred was a member of the BS Chapter of the PEO and a member of the Retired Minister's Fellowship. An avid seamstress, Mildred would even make clothing for her children to wear. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano, cooking, and was very competitive at playing games. Her greatest gift was that of hospitality, and she loved to share it with anyone.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Harold Brady, Sioux Falls, SD; daughters Barbara Stanley and her husband David, Sioux Falls, SD, Carol Jeanne Brady and her friend, Phil Moegenburg, Parker, SD; brother Senator George McGovern, Mitchell, SD; three grandsons, Chris and Kyle Stanley, Eric Smith; great-grandchildren Kathleen, Kegan, and Arianna; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Olive Briles and her husband Phil, a brother Larry McGovern, and a sister-in-law Eleanor McGovern.
The family wishes to thank staff of Avera McKennan Hospice and the Inn on Westport, especially the staff of the Memory Care Unit, for their dedication, care, and love.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials directed to the Alzheimer's Association South Dakota Office, 1000 North West Avenue, Suite 250, Sioux Falls, SD 57104, or to the First United Methodist Church Foundation of Sioux Falls.
Visitation will begin at 1 pm with the family present from 4 to 7 pm and a prayer service at 5:15 pm on Friday, May 7, 2010, at Miller Funeral Home, 13th & Main. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at First United Methodist Church with private interment at Woodlawn Cemetery.
