World War I Medal of Honor recipient. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 18, and three years later he joined the New York National Guard in Ogdensburg, New York. His guard unit was activated, absorbed into the 27th Division, and sent overseas. On September 29, 1918, during an assault of the Hindenburg line near Ronssoy, France, his unit was pinned down under heavy machine gunfire. With another soldier, he rushed the enemy line and successfully silenced two separate machine gun nests. Then, without hesitation, the two soldiers "jumped into the enemy's trench, killed two and captured sixteen (enemy) soldiers". For "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty", Valente was awarded the Medal of Honor in September 1929.
