Financier. Proprietor of "The Observer." Born in Frankfurt, Germany, he emigrated to London, England at a young age, adopting it as his own. He made his fortune in the London Stock Exchange. Known for his remarkable financial ability, keen intellect and clear judgement, he was also a member of the London Banking Association. In 1870, he purchased "The Observer" newspaper owning it until his sudden death. His mausoleum was designed by John Oldrid Scott.
