He played Major League baseball as a pitcher for the Washington Nationals of the Union League in 1884, and for the Baltimore Orioles and Cincinnati Red Stockings of the National League in 1886. However, he is better known in baseball history more for his innovations as a league executive and team owner. He is credited for devising such promotions as "Ladies' Day" and the rain check ticket.
