Musician. Born Richard Terrance Knapp in Lapeer, Michigan, he changed his name to Terry Knight when he began to work as a DJ in the Michigan area. He formed his own band called Terry Knight and the Pack and had one top 50 single in early 1967 titled "I (Who Have Nothing)." After a failed solo career, he took Mark Farner, the guitarist with the Pack and their drummer Don Brewer and added bass guitarist Mel Schacher and gave them the name Grand Funk Railroad. He was the driving force behind the group's rise to superstardom and served as their producer/manager until he was fired in 1972 over royalty disputes. He was stabbed to death in the apartment he shared with his daughter and her boyfriend in Temple, Texas.
