St Charles bio says he was born in Farmer's Village, Seneca Co., NY in
1838; he passed his youth at New London Conn., and New York City he came to Battle Creek, Mich., in 1863, and engaged in the mercantile
business.

He went to Fariault, Minn in 1865 and engaged in the dry goods business for four years, when he came to Chicago, and became interested with Ira Minard in the lumber business, which he continued after Mr Minard's death.
