US Navy Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Ireland, he served in the United States Navy for twenty-six years, 1893 to 1919, retired a Chief Water Tender and is one of very few to receive the Medal of Honor twice for different events. His first Medal of Honor was on May 29, 1901, for heroism at the time of the accident to the boiler of the "USS Vicksburg", which was presented to him by President Theodore Roosevelt on December 6, 1901. The second award was again for extraordinary heroism on the occasion of the accident to one of the boilers of the "USS Salem", on September 13, 1909. His second Medal was presented to him by President William H. Taft on October 19, 1909. The United States Navy guided missile destroyer "USS John King" (DDG-3) was named in his honor.
