Minnesota Governor. Educated at Muskegon Junior College and graduating from the University of Minnesota, in 1931, he had a successful career with the H.B. Fuller Company. He entered politics in 1949, serving as a member of the Minnesota State Senate, serving (1949-59). In 1960, he was elected as a Republican the 30th the Governor of Minnesota, serving until 1963. While in office the fair housing bill was sanctioned, a statewide sanitary law was authorized, highway safety measures were initiated and a governmental ethics act was instituted. After his term, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1964, served as the chairman of the Minnesota Constitutional Study Commission and was successful in the newspaper publishing business. He died shortly after a celebration for his 95th birthday was held in the Minnesota library that bears his name.
