World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Drysdale, Australia, he served as a Captain, in the 7th Machine-Gun Company, 26th Australian Infantry Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. On March 26, 1917, Captain Cherry's was ordered to capture the village of Lagnicourt, France. They soon were under strong German opposition with many casualties. Captain Cherry organized machine-gun and bombing parties, plus sent back frequent reports of progress to his battalion. When he was wounded later in the action, he refused to leave his post. Later that afternoon, he was hit by an artillery single shell and killed instantly. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on May 11, 1917.
