Florence Mathilda Stoner was the third child of John Calvin Stoner and Amanda Jane Church Stoner. During Florence's childhood, the Stoners moved from Sand Mountain to Huntsville, Alabama. She met and married John Robert Mason in Huntsville, where they lived until moving to Memphis and then on to Mississippi in the 1920s. Florence and John had three children: Marion Juanita Mason, who died at birth, Grace Mason Maynor, and John Forrest Mason.
