Life is a beautiful mystery; it unravels in the most unforeseen manners. Some lives are momentous, leaving an indelible impact long after they have transitioned. One such life belonged to Jesse McCord Lewis, a beacon of light, a beacon of love, and a beacon of courage.

Born on June 30, 2006, in Danbury, Connecticut, Jesse McCord Lewis was a luminary even in his youthful days. His spirit was a radiant sunbeam that illumined the world around him. With a vibrant, infectious smile, he painted the canvas of life with hues of joy and warmth, touching the hearts of all who knew him.

Jesse was an extraordinary child, embodying wisdom and compassion well beyond his tender years. His essence echoed in the laughter that filled the hallways of his home, in the tenderness with which he interacted with the family's beloved animals, and in his shared fascination for adventures with his older brother, JT. He was the embodiment of childlike innocence, yet possessed an extraordinary depth of understanding.

On the tragic day of December 14, 2012, Jesse was attending Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, where an unimaginable horror unfolded. An armed assailant barged into the school, snuffing out the lives of innocent children and staff members. Amid the fear and chaos, Jesse stood as a beacon of bravery, attempting to lead his fellow students to safety. His action was a testament to his boundless courage and selflessness. Jesse ran into the hallway to help when he heard the shots. This young soul, aged merely six, lost his life that day, but not before he had showcased an astounding act of valor.

His family said in a Legacy.com obituary, "Jesse died bravely trying to lead other children to safety. He ran into the hallway to help when he heard the shots. In our hearts, we already knew because that was the way he lived his life - fearless, full of courage and strength. We take comfort in knowing what a brave child he was. His actions were consistent with the way he lived his life; passionately embracing everything, a perfect combination of courage and faith, like a little soldier, his favorite toy."

Jesse's vibrant spirit did not perish that day. Rather, it has transcended his mortal life to continue touching lives and inspiring hearts across the globe. His mother, Scarlett Lewis, established the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement in his honor, with the noble objective of "raising awareness that everyone can choose love in any circumstance." This movement empowers individuals, particularly children, with essential life skills that enable them to choose love in the face of adversity.

Scarlett has committed herself to ensuring the proliferation of social and emotional learning strategies in schools, fostering resilience, and healthy connections among children. The Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement has been downloaded in 47 states and 17 countries, continually spreading the message of love and compassion, just as Jesse did in his brief but impactful life.

Jesse's older brother, JT Lewis, has also found solace in service, creating the Newtown Helps Rwanda organization. This initiative aims to provide educational opportunities for orphan genocide survivors in Rwanda, thereby promoting healing through action.

Jesse McCord Lewis was not just a child who loved his mother's arms, his rubber ducks, or his toy soldiers. He was a radiant life that continues to guide, inspire, and love. His courage in the face of horror, his mother's strength in the face of loss, and his family's resolve in the face of grief are a tribute to his extraordinary spirit. A spirit that remains alive, reminding us all of the transformative power of love and compassion.

Jesse's legacy is one of courage, compassion, and love. It is a testament to the profound impact that one life, no matter how brief, can have on the world. His memory continues to inspire, his spirit continues to touch hearts, and his love continues to illuminate the path towards a better, more loving world.

In remembrance of Jesse McCord Lewis, we are reminded to embody courage, compassion, and love in our lives. We are urged to cherish each moment, for life, as Jesse showed us, is fleeting. In his honor, let us choose love over anger, compassion over apathy, and service over self-interest. For as Jesse's life and legacy show us, even the smallest act of love can leave an indelible impact on the world.

Rest in eternal peace, Jesse McCord Lewis, you are loved and remembered, now and always.
