Jessica Adrienne Rekos, born on May 10, 2006, was not just a name, nor just a face among the many youthful ones that graced the hallways of Sandy Hook Elementary. Jessica was a tangible embodiment of vitality, vibrancy, and the untamed spirit of childhood. A light that shone brightly in the lives of those who knew her, Jessica's radiant spirit became an emblem of hope and strength following her untimely passing.

Nestled in the heart of Newtown, Connecticut, the Rekos family welcomed Jessica, their firstborn, with boundless love and joy. As she blossomed into a vivacious, spirited, and engaging child, her parents, Krista and Rich Rekos, realized they had welcomed into their lives not just a daughter, but an enduring source of happiness and inspiration.

Jessica's affable nature and loving spirit turned her home into a sanctuary of familial warmth. As an elder sister to her younger brothers, Travis and Austin, Jessica proved to be a protective and caring companion. She extended her love beyond the boundaries of her immediate family, creating a special bond with her Nana, which was nothing short of magical. The emotional wealth Jessica created within her family is a testament to the person she was - caring, nurturing, and filled with affection.

Her world was one of vibrant passions that radiated from her boundless energy. One such passion was her love for horses. Not just a fleeting childhood fancy, Jessica's love for these noble creatures was profound and genuine. Her weekly riding lessons at King's Bridge Farm fueled her passion further, with every session serving to cement her commitment to riding. The innocent yearning she displayed as she expressed her desire to "ride forever" was emblematic of the depth of her love for horseback riding.

Jessica's fascination wasn't limited to the terrestrial. She held a deep, almost scholarly interest in marine life, particularly whales. Her fervor for understanding these majestic creatures of the deep turned her into a dedicated 'researcher,' filling her notebooks with whale facts, drawings, and musings. This love for life and learning that Jessica embodied was a beacon of her effervescent personality.

However, December 14, 2012, marked a grievous end to this exuberance. On this dark day, the unimaginable occurred. A man stormed into Sandy Hook Elementary School, stealing away the lives of 20 innocent children, including Jessica's. The sanctuary of learning was tarnished with violence, and the community of Newtown was forever marked by tragedy. The untimely end of Jessica's journey left the world grappling with the loss of such a vibrant life, extinguishing a beacon of hope and joy.

The aftermath of the tragedy revealed a heartening demonstration of human resilience. The Rekos family, despite their profound grief, faced an outpouring of support from their community and beyond. They found solace in the actions of those who, despite their own grief and shock, extended a hand of comfort. In the face of their own grief, the Rekos family discovered the strength to turn their personal tragedy into a powerful legacy.

In an effort to immortalize Jessica's spirit and to create a purposeful legacy from the unthinkable tragedy, Jessica's parents established The Jessica Rekos Foundation. The foundation was an embodiment of Jessica's passions, providing horseback riding scholarships for children and funding research and conservation efforts for whales, the creatures she adored. Moreover, it contributed to safety enhancements in preschools and youth facilities, a poignant tribute to Jessica's memory.

For several years, the foundation thrived, channelling the spirit of Jessica's life into positive action. It continued to spread love, happiness, and opportunities, just as Jessica had done in her life. Unfortunately, the foundation has since closed, but its impact continues to echo in the lives of those it touched. Jessica's legacy continues to ripple through time, a testament to the indomitable spirit she possessed.

Jessica's life was tragically cut short, but the vibrancy with which she lived continues to illuminate the lives of her loved ones. She is remembered not just for her boundless enthusiasm and love but also for her strength of character. Her fascination with the world around her, her love for her family, and her commitment to her passions are the essence of her enduring legacy.

To honor Jessica is to honor a life lived with passion, curiosity, and love. Her tragic death cannot overshadow the beautiful story of her life, nor can it extinguish the light of her spirit. Even after her untimely departure, Jessica remains a living inspiration. Her memory encourages us to live our lives with passion, to embrace our curiosities, to love deeply and unconditionally.

In this tribute to Jessica Adrienne Rekos, we remember a child who loved deeply, explored passionately, and lived vibrantly. We remember a child whose spirit still gallops in the meadows, dives deep into the oceans, and fills her home with warmth and love. Jessica, you are missed more than words can express, yet your life and legacy continue to inspire and illuminate the world.

From her parents:

Jessica was our beautiful little girl who brought so much happiness to our lives. She was an independent, smart, and creative little girl who was always eager to learn new things. She spent hours "researching" Orca whales and just wanted to be "friends with an Orca". She also spent her time watching movies about horses, and she had fallen in love with the idea of becoming a cowgirl. She took horseback riding lessons every week, and she loved going on trail rides through the woods.
Jessica made us laugh until we cried with her one-liners and funny responses. She was a natural leader, and we called her our little CEO. She was always planning, asking questions, and figuring out the details. Jess adored her little brothers and loved being with them. Weeks before she died, her horseback riding instructor asked Jess who her best friend was and she replied, "My brother, Travis".

Jessica, 6 years old, loved horseback riding, learning about Orcas, writing, and playing with her little brothers. She will be forever missed by her parents, brothers, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and her many friends.
