Clinton Wallace Merriss was born in Indian Territory (later Ottawa County Oklahoma), to William W. and Justina Paschall Merriss. From birth to his teenage years, he was known by the name of Lincoln Merriss. His paternal grandparents were
Joseph S. Merriss born 1820 in Chagrin Twp., Cuyahoga County Ohio, and Sarah Walkup of Pennsylvania. And maternal grandparents Grace Abner and Luther Paschal.

Native American Background:
His mother, grandmother and great-grandmother (Sarah Tocus) were adopted into the Peoria Indian Tribe of Oklahoma June 1864, while his mother was a small child.
At 19 months of age, Clinton was awarded a land Allotment for 200 acres of Indian Lands by the U.S. Government.
His true Indian blood was that of the Pequot Indian.

At the young age of 21, and before he was married, Clinton was a Fireman with Fire Company No. 2 in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Military Service:
Around the time of the World War I, Clinton held the position of a Departmental Clerk in the Indian Office at Muskogee, Oklahoma. During WWI Clinton was in the Medical Corps. and was stationed at Camp Travis in Texas. His detachment was at the base hospital.
He also served in the National Guard in OK for about 3 years. At age 53 he registered for the WWII draft, which was just months prior to his passing. At the time he was employed at the Muskogee Gravel Company.

Clinton and his wife Henrietta did not have any surviving children.

FORT GIBSON MAN, 54, DIES OF INJURIES; RITES TODAY

Funeral services for Clinton W. Merriss, 54, of Fort Gibson, who died in a local hospital yesterday as a result of injuries suffered last Monday at the Muskogee Sand and Gravel Co. plant near Fort Gibson, will be held at the Thornton funeral home this afternoon at 2 o'clock with a Christian Science reader conducting. Burial will be in Greenhill cemetery.
Merriss had been foreman of the plant for the past four and one-half years.
A railroad gondola which was being switched to the sand company's workings, crushed Merriss' left foot and right thigh.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Henrietta Merriss, of the home; two brothers, Elmer Merriss, Miami Okla. and John Merriss of California, and a sister, Mrs. Henry Rocker, also of California.
Merriss had been a resident of Muskogee for the past 34 years, coming here in 1908. Before becoming an employee of the sand company, he was associated with the Pure Oil Co., here where he had been an employee for 13 years.
