My Mother

I am so thankful that I had my mother in my life for as long as I did. I was able to say many times "thank-you", "see you later" and a few "sorry about that". :)

My mom taught me how to Eskimo kiss, roller skate and that washing with Dial soap cured everything. She loved to play board games and cards. This is the one area where she "slipped"....she cheated. A well-known fact and we teased her constantly about that.

She never smoked, only drank socially. And I hardly ever heard her swear or raise her voice. "Do Unto Others....." was a constant reminder.

During (and after) her funeral, I was approached by people who said things like, "I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for your mother", "Your mother had such a great influence in my life", "Your mom touched many lives".

Today, I am not grieving. I am filled with pride. I am grateful I am my mother's daughter.

LOIS MCGINNIS (FELTON/NERLINGER)

On Tuesday, February 2, 2016 in Wilmington, Lois McGinnis moved to the next stage of her spiritual journey.

She was born the oldest of five children in Pittsburgh, PA on June 30, 1924 to Henry C. and Edith (Maxwell) McGinnis.

As a young woman, Lois organized a Girl Scout Troop, served as a Sunday School teacher and was active in the PTA. She later worked in the Public Relations Dept. for the DuPont Company.

After raising her children, Lois was employed as a news stringer and talk show hostess by a local radio station. She was invited to join the Department of Pastoral Care at the Wilmington Medical Center and became the Chaplain of the Rehab Div. at Pelleport. She helped organize a pastoral visiting department at Union Hospital in Maryland where she taught classes training residents to serve as pastoral visitors.

Lois completed a two year course in spiritual direction at Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Washington, D.C. She lived the vowed anchoritic vocation under the authority of Bishop Cabell Tennis for three years.

Lois became a charter member of the Lay Contemplatives of Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky, served as a guide and led days of quiet reflection and retreats in Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware. At the suggestion of Bishop Wayne Wright she called together a group now known as Spiritual Companions.

Lois was the author of two books: “A Small Guide to Peace” and “The Way to Your True Self”.

She is survived by her three daughters from her marriage to Thomas Felton: Marion, Jane and Kimberly. Lois leaves six grandchildren: John Paul, Mark, Matthew, Aaron, Lyndsey, Jessica and 12 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her step-children from her marriage to Ludwig Nerlinger: Madelyn, Julie, Marlyn, Sister Mary Michael, Michael, Christine, Anthony, Marcia, Susan, Kevin and their families as well as nephews, nieces and friends.

Thank you to Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 11;00 AM at Immanuel Church Highlands, 2400 W. 17th Street, Wilmington, DE 19806. Interment was private at Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery.
