Catherine was the daughter of Warren Bass and Mariah Barbee. Sister of Lilly Hettie, William Dan, Elizabeth, and Sampson Cooley Bass. Her first marriage was to a Mr. Pelvy, prior to 1865. He died during the Civil War. From the records, it appear this was a marriage that lasted only a few week. They had no children. On September 4, 1865, she married William Henry Tarpley. Children of this union were 4 that died in infancy, Frances Danniel, Nancy Jane, and twin boys. Four that lived to be adults; Martha Jane, Sarah Marie, Susie, and William G. Tarpley.

Catherine and Henry came to Texas by wagon in the fall of 1869. It took three months of time to make this trip. They first settled near Melissa, but moved to their home near Culleoka in 1877. A community she continued to reside in for more than fifty years. Aunt Kate was converted to Christianity at the age of 16, and joined the Missionary Baptist church at the age of 20. On April 18, 1922, Catherine applied for Widow's Pension from the State of Texas for Military service of Henry during the Civil War. She received same in May,1922.

Catherine died at the home of her daughter, Susie Akin, one mile east of Culleoka, at the extreme age of 90 years, 10 months and 12 days old.
