John Clayton Carter, 67, passed away at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado on March 16, 2000. Born in Greenwich, Cumberland County, New Jersey, on November 6, 1932, he was the son of the late Hopewell Carter and Lethia Harriett Coker Carter, being the middle of five children.
On January 18, 1952 he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force, served for four years, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Airman 1st Class on January 17, 1956.
On January 11, 1958 in Bridgeton, Cumberland County, New Jersey, he was united in marriage to Christine Harris, daughter of Mont Washington Harris and Ruby Lewallen Harris of Boone County, West Virginia.
A year or so after the birth of their first son John in Dover, Delaware, he and his new family moved to southern California, his having developed a fondness for the area during his Air Force service, having been stationed for a time at March Air Force Base in Riverside.
During the years in southern California, a second son Jim was born in Riverside, California. In the summer of 1970, the family visited friends in northeastern New Mexico who'd recently relocated there from southern California, and, desiring to move out of the city and into a small-town area, John & his family followed suit and moved to Raton, New Mexico in the summer of 1971.
While their sons grew up and went away to school or moved out on their own, John & Christine remained in Raton until 1989, and later ventured to Tonopah, Arizona and back to Boone County, West Virginia. His wife Christine passed away in Boone County on December 3, 1996. John resided in Colorado Springs, Colorado from 1990 until his passing.
He was pre-deceased by his brothers Leroy A. in 1982, and Perry W. in 1995. He is survived by his sons John Cyrus of St. Petersburg, FL and Jim Curtis of Huntington Beach, CA, one brother Donald L. of Bridgeton, NJ, one sister S. Evelyn Schroeder of Pittsgrove, NJ, one grandson Cameron James of Huntington Beach, CA, one daughter-in-law, two step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
An avid treasure hunter all his life, he never gave up his search for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Now he has found his treasure.
