Dorothy Jane (Sperry) Holladay was born the daughter of Gertrude May Lacey and Ethelbert Ralston Sperry in Columbus Ohio on May 13, 1907. She was the oldest of 3 children. She grew up in two cities, Columbus, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan. Attended school mostly in Detroit, she liked to tell people Diana Ross attended the same school. Her family moved back and forth several times between the two cities.
Living in Detroit she developed a love for the sport of Hockey; and often attending Red Wings Games in Detroit as well as in Montreal and Toronto. One could take the all night train to see back to back games which she did often with her best friend Ann. She saw some greats play the game. Her personal favorite was Gordie Howe. Hockey was much harder to follow once leaving Detroit, but years later she attending some hockey games with her son in Columbus. An IHL team, The Columbus Owls played there.
Dorothy worked for Michigan Bell and helped put her younger brother and sister, Robert and Betty through school. Living in Detroit she had many stories of folks hiding bear meat to come across the border with Canada so they would have food for their families during the war and The Depression. She also told stories about the immense effort to protect the tunnel from The US to Canada; and how it was often lined with soldiers.
She married Ernest A. Holladay in Detroit at The Calvary EUB Church, but she and Ernest made their home in Columbus, Ohio.
Throughout her life Dorothy was active with her church in various circles. She was also the church secretary for many years. A voracious reader, she often stayed up late to finish a book she couldn't put down.
She loved green beans and dedicated several days a year to the processing and canning of green beans and peaches. Often putting up a cot in the kitchen to get the job done through the cooler night hours. She enjoyed crafts knitting and crocheting many an afghan, baby blanket and the like for friends and family. One special item we proudly display every Christmas is a hand painted nativity set she made in ceramics.
Dorothy died in 1981, 2 years before her granddaughter who looks a great deal like her was born. Like Dorothy, her granddaughter is a voracious reader and quite active with her church.
Dorothy is buried along side her husband Ernest at Union Cemetery.
