Born Nils Martin Orjansen in Solsvik, Fjell, Hordaland, Norway. Youngest of eight children born to Bernt and Marie (Nilsen-Toft) Orjansen. Brother to Nora Gustavson, Birgitta, Olga Meier, Oyvind, Bergliot Olsen, Berny Kaarevik and Jacob Orjansen. Husband of Emilia Monica Wandler,, daughter of Sebastian and Frances Isabel (Senn) Wandler. Father of Nils Jr. and Lawrence Solsvik. He celebrated 50 years of marriage on August 29, 2003. He grew to adulthood in his native Norway. He served in the Norwegian Navy during the Second World War, assigned to the destroyer escort Glaisdale. He immigrated to the United States on February 17, 1948, arriving in New York City on board the Norwegian passenger ship S.S. Stavangerfjord. He became a United States citizen on April 11, 1955 in Seattle, King County, Washington. During his younger years he worked as a commercial fisherman primarily in Alaska before joining the Pacific Maritime Association as a longshoreman in 1965. He retired from the Seattle waterfront in the early 1980s. The last several years of his life saw him in declining health from increased respiratory difficulties. He died at his home from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at the age of 81.
