Mr. J. Howard Horton, 95, first married to the late Erma Rivers Horton and widower of Eva Clark Horton, died Thursday at the Colleton Medical Center.
Mr. Horton was born August 20, 1908 in McBee, SC, a son of the late T.A. Horton and Mary Susan Gardner Horton. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the Men's Club. He was a World War II, Army veteran and a former employee of C.D. Franke, Bowman Products and Corbett Building Supply.
Survivors include six nieces and nephews, Ann Brown Singleton and husband Jack of Baton Rouge, LA, Susan Brown of Baton Rouge, LA, Elaine Brown of Baton Rouge, LA, Earl Bruce Brown, Jr and wife Gay of Kingwood, TX, T. B. and Mary Corbett of Walterboro, and Paula Rivers of Mt. Pleasant.
Mary Corbett was like a daughter to him and spent endless hours caring for him along with her husband, Burnice Corbett (his nephew), taking him to doctor's appointments, shopping with him, or just spending time with him. Without her loving care, he would have been lost.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Belle Horton Brown.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens mausoleum, conducted by Rev. Nelson Stokes and directed by Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street, Walterboro, SC.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Mausoleum.
My Uncle Howard was the essence of a Southern gentleman. He was very kind and generous. I remember as a child he was like Santa Claus to me because he would always send the most wonderful unexpected things through the mail. One summer we went to the beach and that was the most glorious time, running in and out of the waves. Folly Beach has always been like a dream I made up because he made those few weeks so wonderful.
