He was killed after being mistaken for an Iraqi insurgent as he investigated the wreckage of an Iraqi T-72 tank destroyed by his unit in central Iraq. He enlisted in the Army at 17 and made it a career. Among his military awards and decorations was the Bronze Star.

Interment on April 24, 2003.
