Theatrical producer. In 1897, she founded Elitch Gardens Theater, the first and longest running summer stock theater company in the country. Construction was modeled after Shakespeare's Globe theater. Upon opening, she hired a 14-year-old Douglas Fairbanks as a stage hand, who later was a leading man in this theater and onscreen. In 1905, leading man Cecil B. DeMille stated it was "the cradle of American theater." Currently the theater is being renovated with the backing of alumnae, Debbie Reynolds, Cloris Leachman and Patty Duke. Other well known alumnae include Edward G. Robinson, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Vincent Price, Gloria Swanson, Ginger Rogers, Lana Turner, Sarah Bernhardt, Grace Kelly, Hume Cronyn, and Jessica Tandy.
