Husband of Gladys Lee Johnson Cather.

Hubert and Gladys were married July 6, 1931 in Wood County, Parkersburg, West Virginia.

Father of Joanne Louise Cather Terry, Robert Lee Cather, Cary Wayne Cather, Kitty Lynn Cather, and Bonnie Mae Cather.

Strawberry, as he was called by all his work associates, friends, and by his two sons, was the Acid Department Head for Avtex Corp. in Front Royal, Virginia. I don't recall him ever missing a day of work. He was home every afternoon by 5:00, and every weekend. He was a family man.

In the leaner years, he grew the biggest, juiciest strawberries and he and Mom sold them door to door to make extra money. This is how he got his nickname, years before I was born. The road beside the home Mom and Dad lived in the last 52 (and 54) years of their lives is named Strawberry Lane in his honor.

Every summer Dad planted a garden. I loved the cucumber salad he would make and the green tomatoes Mom would fry. Every fall he would can his vegetables and we did a lot of picking and shelling and stringing.

I remember that he ate healthy foods before it became mainstream. When I was just a kid, he would eat Wheat Germ. He sprinkled it on something...I don't remember what. He liked navy beans on bread and used to try to get me to eat it, knowing I wouldn't. He liked ice in his milk. He liked to read about evolution. He was a great joke and story teller. He enjoyed watching the birds in the yard and building bluebird houses.

He never raised his voice at me and he never spanked me. The one time he tried, I was too fast. I must have done something awful because it was the only attempt he ever made.

He had beautiful blue eyes and straight white teeth.

I wish I had the chance to talk to him once more to tell him I love him.
