Manuel A. Gonzalez, Jr., 43 years old, a 16 year veteran of the Department of Corrections, was fatally stabbed by an inmate at the California Institution for Men, Chino.
Officer Gonzalez is survived by his parents Manuel and Bertha Gonzalez; younger siblings: Rosalinda, David and Delia; former wife Sylvia Ortiz and their children: Mark, Steven, Roxanna, and Jessica; his fiancee Tania Cuarda, and their children: Manuel and Gustavo.

He was the brother-in-law to slain sheriff's Deputy Jerry Ortiz.∼Manuel Gonzalez Jr. was a Correctional Officer for the California Department of Corrections, at the California Institution for Men in Chino, California. He worked there 17 years, dying in the line of duty at age 43. He was stabbed to death by an Inmate in the Sycamore Hall Unit. The suspect, who was an appointed spokesperson for a portion of the prison population, had been permitted to leave his cell to speak with other inmates about their complaints. A short time later, a prison guard observed that same inmate attacking Officer Gonzalez and ordered the suspect to get down. The suspect walked away as Officer Gonzalez fell to the ground. Officer Gonzalez was not wearing a vest. He had been stabbed with a homemade shank. On his way to the local hospital, he died from his wounds. The inmate, a known gang member, was kept in custody and transferred to a different facility. Two other inmates were also transferred to another facility, as the result of that incident. Six months after Officer Gonzalez's death, his brother inlaw Jerry Ortiz was shot and killed. He was a Sheriff's Deputy for Los Angeles County, who was investigating gang-related activity at a apartment complex. Officer Gonzalez was survived by his wife and six children.
