Titanic Lookout, Survivor. He was on duty as a co-lookout with Frederick Fleet on board the RMS Titanic the night of April 14, 1912, in which 1,500 passengers and crew died following a collision with an iceberg during the ship's maiden Atlantic voyage. He survived the sinking of the Titanic after being assigned as a rower to one of the ships lifeboats. He was ordered to appear before the British Board of Trade to give testimony as a material witness to the disaster. Prior to joining the Titanic he served as a member of the British Royal Navy and as a lookout on board Titanic's sister ship Olympic. He served on board the vessel Kenilworth Castle until shortly before his death. He died from heart failure resulting from pneumonia at the "Sailor's Home" in Southamption and was buried in the town of Southsea, Hampshire, England.
