Larry Serrell, 45, area sportswriter
GUILDERLAND--Lawrence "Larry" Serrell, 45, of Main Street, Guilderland Center, a former sportswriter for the Knickerbocker News and the Schenectady Gazette, died Friday at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, after a brief illness. Cause of death was not disclosed.
Born and educated in Schenectady, he graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1956. He attended Siena and Union College, graduating in 1959.
He worked for the Gazette from 1967 until last year, devoting much of his career to covering area high school sports. He was on the Knickerbocker News sports staff from 1962 to 1967. Prior to that, he worked for the Schenectady Union Star and newspapers in Syracuse and Oneida, Madison County and in Georgia.
For the past two years , he was director of press relations for the New York State "Super 16" Basketball Tournament in Glens Falls. He was also organizer and past president of the New York State Sportswriters Association.
His other memberships include the United States Turf Writers Assocciation, American Newspaper Guild, New York State Racing Association and the New York State Basketball Association.
He was a member of St.Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Scotia.
Survivors include his mother, Ruth Egan Serrell; three sons, Lawrence Jr., Sean and Kirk all of North Carolina; four daughters, Mary Lee of Albany, Lorraine Ann of Long Island, Elizabeth Catherine of Pennsylvania and Sharon Lynn of North Carolina; a brother, Daniel Serrell of Schenectady, and a grandchild.
Services will be held at 9a.m. today from the Bond Funeral Home, Schenectady, and at 9:30a.m. at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady.

He is the father of 10 children, some names left out in the obituary; Children; Sharon Lynn, Mary Lee, Lorraine Ann, Elizabeth Catherine, Lawrence Egan Jr, Sean Egan, Kirk Egan, Miri Danielle, Bryan William and Jeffrey Adam.
