Born in Atlanta, Nebraska, James was the eldest of four children born to Arthur James and Laura (Fitch) Polhemus. He attended school at Atlanta, graduating from Atlanta High School in 1937. He then pursued higher education in Pasadena, California. Following his education, James served his country during World War II and was stationed in England and France, where he participated in D-Day at Normandy Beach. With his first wife, Virginai Baumer, James had four children: Jane, James, Jr., Mark, and Matthias. He and his family lived in the Houston, Texas, area. On Nov. 23, 1970 he married Sylvia Durbin Isam at Birmingham, Alabama. The couple made their home in Funk, Nebraska. James was the grandfather of seven; and the great grandfather of five. He was preceded in death by his son, James, and his brother Lynn. James was laid to rest in the veterans section of Prairie Home Cemetery.
