Robert was the son of Richard and Anna (?) Van Jones. His siblings were: Richard, Arthur and Mary J.

He married Ann Tennis in October, 1924 at St. Aloysius Church in Great Neck, NY., and their union produced Robert and Mary.

According to The Record of Internment (DA Form 2122), Robert served in the United States Naval Reserve Forces from Dec 19, 1917 to Aug 22, 1923.

During his service, he was assigned to the 3rd Naval District, NY. and served aboard the USS President Grant from 1917 to 1918.

The USS President Grant (ID-3014), formerly the USS Republic (AP-33), was a troop transport that served with the US Navy during World War I, making sixteen round trips between New York and ports of France, carrying a total of 40,104 servicemen on her eastbound passage, and a total of 37,025 servicemen on her westbound returns to New York.
