As a 10-year old in 1937, Mercedes starred in her first and only movie "Ora Ponciano," a dream come true for her as she always wanted to be a movie star. "Yes, Indeed, my career will be movie work" she once said. Coming from an artistic family, her parents supported her in her endeavor.

In "Ora Ponciano" Mercedes played the role of a daughter of a toreador. She made the picture in Mexico City, while she lived at Rio de Janeiro. Her brother, Juanito, also appeared in the film. The film was shown in the United States.

Mercedes held dual citizenship in the US and Mexico. She was born in New York and during her childhood spent two years in Washington with her family. She mainly lived in Mexico. She was very fond of American boys and girls. She liked going to school in the US, too. As a little girl, she used to pronounce "Hollywood" as "Hollybud." She enjoyed going to the movies whenever she got the chance.

Mercedes was the daughter of Juan Francisco Azcarate, the military attache' of the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C., and his equally beautiful musician wife, Eva Pulgar.

Mercedes was first married to Mauricio Mendez Meardi and they had one daughter, Eva Mercedes, who passed away in 2001. She married secondly, Edmundo Fausto Zorilla Martinez.
