Marc Douglas Curtis was born at 2:07 p.m. on Friday, September 10, 1965 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City to Brent T. Curtis and Shirley Danielsen. The fifth of six children, Marc's childhood was spent in the family home at 116 West 6480 South in Murray. He graduated from Murray High School, Class of 1983. He received further instruction from the School of Hard Knocks, graduating summa cum laude.
Marc loved fishing, camping, deer hunting, going to Wendover, listening to country music and classic rock, playing chess, and eating his mother's cooking. He was a huge dog lover. Dogs, being good judges of character, felt the same about him. Marc was also a big sports fan, football being his favorite. Utah by 5!! Go Steelers! Marc had a deep and abiding love of (i.e., borderline obsession with) candy and ice cream. He never met a candy bar or ice cream flavor that he didn't like!
Marc had a long and successful career in the construction industry. He was employed as a painter, plumber, and concrete finisher, spending most of his working years at Kip Slaugh & Associates.
Channeling his inner Jack Kerouac, Marc had many exciting adventures during his journey on the highway of life. He resided in a number of places, including Las Vegas, Nevada; South Salt Lake, Taylorsville, Salt Lake City, Holladay, Gunnison, Draper, Kearns, and West Valley City. Marc was the original, definitive hellraiser, stubbornly marching to the beat of his own drum. He lived life on his own terms. Marc was well-known for his rambunctious sense of humor and dramatic flair. He wasn't just a card, he was the entire deck!
Marc was everyone's favorite uncle. He was never blessed with children, but he treated his nieces and nephews like they were his own. He never judged, could always be counted on for a good time, and took a genuine interest in their lives and accomplishments. His niece, Ashley, and nephew, Coby, have fond memories of Marc's tales about "moon monkeys." He used to make them leave out green bananas and beer every time there was a full moon in case the "moon monkeys" decided to drop in for a visit.
In his final years, Marc suffered from Stage IV Colon Cancer. Facing each day with a steely-eyed determination to live, he inspired many of us. It was impossible not to like Marc. Once you knew him, you loved him. It was as simple as that. We will always remember him for his incredible charm, contagious laugh, outgoing demeanor, and lovable grin.
On the morning of Sunday, August 10, 2014, this world became a lesser place when our beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend passed away unexpectedly due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Parley's Canyon. While we are deeply saddened by his passing, we are grateful that he is no longer in pain and enjoying a reunion with our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

On Sunday, August 24, 2014, two weeks after his death, a small group of Marc's friends and family gathered together to place a cross in his honor near the area where he died in Parley's Canyon.
After the funeral took place, Marc's ashes were placed in the cemetery vault to await the arrival of his headstone. On Tuesday, October 28, 2014, the headstone came and Marc's ashes were placed inside. Except they weren't. Somewhere along the way, there was a major communication breakdown and the headstone was placed sans Marc. He remained in the vault. This grievous injustice was discovered by the mortuary staff on Saturday, April 23, 2016.
On Monday, April 25, 2016, with Dale and Ryan as witnesses, Marc was finally laid to rest beside his beloved father in the family plot at Redwood Memorial Estates Cemetery. Ryan lowered the plastic box containing Marc's ashes into the grave and a cemetery worker subsequently closed it. Salt Lake Tribune columnist Paul Rolly did a write-up on the incident. It appeared in the Wednesday, May 11, 2016 edition of the Trib.

Graveside services were held under the direction of David Coonradt.
The invocation was offered by David Coonradt.
The obituary was read by Dale Curtis.
A musical selection was performed by Coby and Ashlee Coonradt.
There was an "open mic," where anyone who wanted was able to share their favorite memories of Marc.
The grave was dedicated by Robert Curtis.
The benediction was offered by Ryan Curtis.
Following the services, two wakes in honor of Marc were held — one at the home of his friend, Kevin Bailey, in South Jordan and one at the home of his mother in Santaquin.
On Sunday, August 24, 2014, two weeks after his death, a small group of Marc's friends and family gathered together to place a cross in his honor near the area where he died in Parley's Canyon.
After the funeral took place, Marc's ashes were placed in the cemetery vault to await the arrival of his headstone. On Tuesday, October 28, 2014, the headstone came and Marc's ashes were placed inside. Except they weren't. Somewhere along the way, there was a major communication breakdown and the headstone was placed sans Marc. He remained in the vault. This grievous injustice was discovered by the mortuary staff on Saturday, April 23, 2016.
On Monday, April 25, 2016, with Dale and Ryan as witnesses, Marc was finally laid to rest beside his beloved father in the family plot at Redwood Memorial Estates Cemetery. Ryan lowered the plastic box containing Marc's ashes into the grave and a cemetery worker subsequently closed it. Salt Lake Tribune columnist Paul Rolly did a write-up on the incident. It appeared in the Wednesday, May 11, 2016 edition of the Trib.
As maddening as this whole situation has been, I'm sure Marc is getting a kick out of it. Worst luck ever! Rest in peace (for real this time!), Uncle Marc.
